Global Maritimes to branch into separate Halifax and New Brunswick stations

HALIFAX and FREDERICTON – Shaw Media-owned Global News announced it is rebranding its Global Maritimes operations to Global Halifax and Global New Brunswick as part of its mandate to tell more locally-focused stories.

The separation of Global Maritimes into the two new stations, which takes places April 15, moves both Global Halifax and Global New Brunswick from being an amalgamated regional news source to focusing more on local stories in both areas. Global is highlighting the move with new programming and the hiring of new on-air talent

The two stations will continue to share some newsgathering and reporting resources, including the use of senior anchor Ron Kronstein and meteorologist Trevor Adams in both markets.

Global News has also hired broadcast journalist Shelley Steeves as Global New Brunswick’s new senior correspondent. The recipient of several national and international journalism awards, the Moncton, N.B. native brings over 18 years of broadcast experience to the Global New Brunswick team. Prior to joining Global, Steeves was a reporter and producer for CBC News Moncton as well as the Atlantic bureau chief for the Weather Network.

“The rebranding of Global Maritimes into Global Halifax and Global New Brunswick demonstrates our continued investment in creating a state of the art news operation centred on local reporting,” says Troy Reeb, senior vice-president, Global News and station operations, in the announcement. “This move caps off what has already been a successful period of growth in the region and represents the importance we place on providing timely and poignant community coverage.”

This broadcast team will continue to produce two different, locally-focused Evening News casts for viewers in Halifax and surrounding areas, as well as for those in New Brunswick. On Monday, April 15, the team will replace the current one-hour regional News Final at 11pm with a local 30-minute News Final newscast for both stations. Each newscast will feature hyper-local news and content as well as local weather forecasts tailored specifically to audiences in both provinces.
