Global, CTV, Citytv report success with audiences this fall

TORONTO – Fall is well underway and Corus, Bell and Rogers are all reporting the season is off to a good start for Global, CTV and Citytv respectively, albeit using different measurements of success.

Corus Entertainment announced last week Global has been scoring high audience ratings this fall, with six of the top ten most watched shows in Canada.

Based on Numeris PPM Data from Sept. 20 to Oct. 24, a Corus press release says the network’s “roaster of established hits returned with a vengeance this fall.”

Corus programs in the top ten most watched include CSI: Vegas (average of 1.8 million viewers), 9-1-1 (average of nearly 1.8 million viewers), Survivor (average of 1.7 million viewers), NCIS (average of 1.6 million viewers), FBI (average of 1.5 million viewers), NCIS: Hawai’i (average of 1.5 million viewers).

Bell Media’s CTV is also reporting it has shows resonating with Canadian audiences.

According to a Bell spokesperson, Numeris data for total viewers for Sept. 20 to Oct. 24, 2021, shows “CTV continues to lead with audiences for full day, including with total viewers and in all key demos, leading its closest competitor by more than 20%.” This includes total viewers, A18-29 and A25-54.

“Each week, CTV also continues to reach more Canadian in primetime with 13 million viewers on average, more than any other network with a double digit advantage across all key demos,” the spokesperson said in an email to Cartt.ca.

The email indicated CTV has had the most watched series with total viewers four out of six weeks this fall. This includes The Rookie, (Sept. 20, 1.8 million), The Good Doctor (Sept. 27, 1.9 million), Blue Bloods (Oct. 18, 1.7 million), and The Good Doctor again (Oct. 25, 1.9 million).

Rogers’s Citytv, meanwhile, reported it has seen a significant growth in its audiences.

“Out of all the Canadian conventional television networks, Citytv leads in year-over-year audience growth, seeing a 40% increase in AMA (average minute audience) with A25-54,” a spokesperson said in an email to Cartt.ca. This is based on Numeris data from Sept. 13, 2021 to Oct. 31, 2021 compared to Sept. 14, 2020 to Nov. 1, 2020.

“Looking over a span of seven weeks in 2021, audience growth for Citytv primetime is up in all key demos, year-over-year, with Ind. 2+ up 31%, A18-49 up 38%, and A25-54 up 36%,” the spokesperson said. This is based on Numeris data from Sept. 13, 2021 to Nov. 7, 2021 versus Sept. 14, 2020 to Nov. 8, 2020 (Monday to Sunday, 8 p.m. to 11 p.m.).
