CALGARY — As veteran newsman Tony Tighe prepares to anchor his last Global News at Noon broadcast on Thursday, Global Calgary announced the new anchor of its noon-hour newscast will be Bindu Suri (pictured centre), currently the weekend co-anchor of Global News Morning.
In a news release announcing Suri as the new Global News at Noon anchor, Global Calgary said Suri “has built a robust audience as weekend anchor and brings a strong profile in the community to the News at Noon.”
Also announced was an expanded role for Global Calgary’s business reporter, Tomasia DaSilva (pictured right), who will assume the consumer reporting beat for Global News. Building on her ongoing “Minding Your Business” segment on Global News Hour at 6, DaSilva will now cover the consumer, business and money stories that impact Calgarians.
After spending more than four decades at the forefront of journalism in Calgary, Tony Tighe (pictured left) is retiring from Global News. In addition to anchoring his final broadcast of Global News at Noon on Thursday, Tighe will join the Global News Hour at 6 team to look back on some of his career highlights. Global Calgary will start the celebration of Tighe’s career on Thursday with The Morning News with Gord Gillies and Sue Devell on Global News Radio 770 CHQR.
As a long-time consumer reporter and champion, Tighe became Calgary’s greatest advocate of righting consumer wrongs, earning many accolades for his investigations and feature reporting, including being honoured with the Radio Television Digital News Association’s (RTDNA) Lifetime Achievement Award.
“Tony Tighe’s stellar reporting and support for community organizations have changed our city for the better,” said Chris Bassett, news director for Global Calgary, in the news release. “No one can cut to the heart of a story like Tony and we have been honoured to work with him for so many years.”
