SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – About 567 million people around the world will have subscribed to broadband by 2011, almost double the current 285 million subscribers, according to a report released Wednesday by market research firm In-Stat.
In the last 12 months, about 65 million new broadband subscribers signed up for high-speed Internet access, stated the report, entitled Broadband Gets Big: Global Broadband Subs Hit 285 Million.
“The principal market driver for the adoption of broadband service is pretty straightforward: people want to access the Internet with a higher-speed connection,” said In-Stat analyst Mike Paxton. “Beyond this basic desire, the emergence of online applications such as viewing video clips or TV programming, downloading music files, and even playing online games, are fueling end-user demand for ‘fatter pipes.’ ”
In-Stat also found that DSL and cable modem services account for 92% of worldwide broadband connections, and predicted that DSL will account for 58% of all Internet access by 2011.
