OTTAWA – Canadians continue to embrace game consoles, and they are playing an increasingly larger role in Canadian families’ media viewing habits, according to a new study from Media Technology Monitor.
The study reports nearly half (45%) of Canadian households own a game console. Most popular in high-income households, game consoles are especially likely to be found in homes with children and teens, with four in five of these households owning a console.
As this penetration increases, the game console is being transformed from a single-function technology into a media hub, allowing families to access the internet and play video and audio content on the same device they use for traditional gaming. MTM’s research data found that the game console is the device Canadians use most often to connect the internet to a TV.
The report, entitled “Game Consoles Are Not Just For Gaming Anymore,” is now available to MTM subscribers on the company’s website.
