Freedom upgrades 5G network in three provinces

Quebecor’s Freedom Mobile said Monday it has in recent months upgraded its wireless network by activating nearly 180 5G sites in British Columbia, Alberta and Ontario.

The upgrades increase the telecom’s footprint by over a million people, with some being able to take advantage of 5G+ technology as a result of the upgrades, the telecom said.

The upgrades are in the Greater Toronto Area, which will see more extensive 5G+ coverage, and outlying communities such as Bradford West Gwillimbury, Newmarket, and Stouffville. Additional Ontario communities include Barrie, Brantford, Cambridge, Guelph Hamilton, Kitchener, London, Niagara Falls, Peterborough, St. Catharines, Waterloo, and Windsor.

In B.C. and Alberta, 40 new 5G cell sites were added in areas of Edmonton, Calgary, Vancouver – the downtown of which has started to see 5G+ technology – and Victoria.

The telecom is using the 3.5 and 3.8 GHz spectrum to power the technology.

“As Canada’s fourth major telecommunications player, it is important for us to continue investing heavily in our wireless network, which helps us provide coverage across 99% of the Canadian population, and in our mobile services, to which 33 million Canadians can now subscribe,” Quebecor CEO Pierre Karl Peladeau said in a press release.
