Freedom starts deploying 3.8 GHz spectrum in major provinces

Quebecor’s Freedom Mobile announced Friday it has started the “progressive” deployment of its 3.8 GHz spectrum across its 5G+ network in Ontario, Alberta and British Columbia.

“This spectrum deployment will significantly upgrade Freedom’s network capabilities, allowing customers with compatible 5G+ devices and plans to enjoy faster connectivity with theoretical peak download speeds exceeding 1 Gbps, resulting in an even more seamless mobile experience,” a press release said.

The telecom said the deployment will enhance the existing 5G+ coverage zones in the Greater Toronto Area, Burlington, Oakville and Milton in Ontario; Edmonton and Calgary, Edmonton International Airport, the West Edmonton Mall, and St. Albert, among others in Alberta; and Vancouver, Burnaby, Surrey, and Delta in British Columbia.

“The activation of 3800 MHz spectrum with our network shows our determination to challenge the Big Three while establishing a strong fourth competitor in Canada’s wireless market,” Quebecor CEO Pierre Karl Peladeau said in the release. “Since its acquisition by Quebecor, Freedom Mobile has invested heavily in network infrastructure to expand its capabilities while maintaining the competitive pricing that Canadians deserve. We remain committed to innovation that keeps wireless services both affordable and accessible.”

Quebecor has spent more than $1.1 billion since 2021 on both 3.5 and 3.8 GHz spectrum, allowing for faster speeds and lower latency.
