CALGARY – Freedom Mobile customers in Calgary will soon have better LTE coverage, including stronger indoor reception, now that the Shaw-owned carrier has begun rolling out its Band 13 700 MHz spectrum in that city.
“Freedom Mobile’s Extended Range LTE leverages Band 13 700 MHz spectrum to provide customers with farther-reaching coverage and stronger indoor wireless reception than anything we’ve been able to offer to date,” said Shaw’s wireless president Paul McAleese, in Tuesday's news release. “The deployment of additional spectrum is our latest step in creating an improved wireless experience that includes seamless connectivity, the latest handsets, and the high-speed LTE data plans that our customers are looking for.”
Shaw bought seven 700 MHz and 2500 MHz wireless spectrum licences from Quebecor Media Inc. in 2017, a move that it says allows Freedom Mobile “to progressively enhance its network in Southern Ontario, British Columbia and Alberta”. It did not, however, specify when that spectrum will roll out in B.C. or Ontario.
The company added that it is also offering Voice over LTE (VoLTE) nationally on select LG, Samsung, Sony, Motorola and Alcatel devices, a service that will also be available to eligible Apple devices in the coming months.
