CALGARY and VANCOUVER – Freedom Mobile customers travelling on Vancouver's SkyTrain transit service now have underground connectivity on the Metro Vancouver SkyTrain.

Shaw said Wednesday that its wireless customers may now access LTE service at the Waterfront, Burrard, Granville and Stadium-Chinatown stations — as well as in the tunnels that connect them — so that they can use their phone in the tunnel exactly as they would above ground.

“Underground wireless connectivity means that Freedom Mobile customers now have more opportunity to text friends and loved ones, post to Instagram or respond to emails in the tunnel between Waterfront and Stadium-Chinatown stations,” said Shaw’s wireless president Paul McAleese, in the news release.  “Our partnership with TransLink will make it possible for Freedom Mobile customers to stay connected and get even more value out of their service during their commute.”

TransLink and Freedom Mobile said that they are working to expand wireless connectivity throughout the SkyTrain footprint.

“The tunnel between Waterfront and Stadium-Chinatown stations is one of the busiest SkyTrain sections, so we’re pleased to have partnered with Freedom Mobile to offer wireless connectivity to our mutual customers throughout their downtown ride,” added Derrick Cheung, TransLink’s VP strategic sourcing and real estate. “We know that uninterrupted connectivity is important to transit users and we’re pleased that these kinds of partnerships can improve our customers’ experience at no cost to transit customers or taxpayers.”
