PHILADELPHIA – Former Rogers Cable vice-president engineering, Tony Werner was named chief technology officer at North America’s largest cable company, Comcast Cable, on Monday.
In this role, Werner will be responsible for developing and guiding the company’s technology strategy and evolving network architecture, including supporting next-generation consumer systems and technologies, infrastructure and engineering, network integration and management tools and technical standards.
Werner succeeds David Fellows, who announced his plans to step down and transition into a part-time executive fellow role with the company earlier this year.
"Tony’s wealth of engineering and technology experience will be crucial as we leverage our fiber network and IP technology to deploy advanced, integrated services," said Steve Burke, president of Comcast Cable. "He has unparalleled expertise and insights into the cable industry’s future network needs, and I’m delighted that he is joining our leadership team."
Werner currently serves as senior vice-president and chief technology officer for Liberty Global based in Englewood, Colo., leading the company’s global strategy for video, voice and data services. He has more than 25 years of engineering and technical management experience, having held senior management positions with Qwest Communications, Aurora Networks, TeleCommunications, Inc. (TCI)/AT&T Broadband, Rogers Communications, Inc., and RCA Cablevision Systems.
Werner worked for Rogers in Minneapolis in the early 1980s, when Rogers was a large American player, and came to Toronto to help lead the rebuild of the Toronto system after the company sold its U.S. operations years later.
In the mid-1990s, he left Rogers and went to TeleCommunications Inc., then the largest U.S. MSO.
Comcast has 24.1 million cable customers, 11 million high-speed Internet customers, and 2.1 million voice customers.
