VANCOUVER – John Munro, who retired as Rogers Cable’s chief marketing officer in 2006, died of a heart attack at his home in the Vancouver area on April 4th. He was 59.
In his last position at Rogers, Munro (pictured) was responsible for the day-to-day product management and the national marketing communications function, including advertising of all Rogers Cable products, all support marketing material and customer communications.
He also represented the cable side of the company on several inter-company initiatives including development and execution of the corporate master brand strategy, CRM and sponsorship development.
"John was a delightful man. Everyone liked John and got along with him," Rogers Cable president Edward Rogers told Cartt.ca this week.
Rogers credited Munro with helping professionalize the marketing message of the cable business and bringing consistency to the company’s marketing campaigns across all of its platforms.
"The people who talked best about him are the ones who worked right for him," added Rogers. "To me, that’s a real testament because the boss can’t be nice all the time. He was a firm guy but a real pleasant gentleman."
Prior to his cable work, Munro was vice-president of marketing, Rogers Video, based in Vancouver, which he joined in 2000. During his tenure, Video realized record growth in terms of same store customer visits, average transaction value and profitability. Prior to Rogers Video, he was president of two Palmer Jarvis DDB Advertising companies (First Event Sponsorship Marketing and 360° Data Base Marketing); executive vice-president, Greyhound Lines of Canada; executive director, Tourism Vancouver; vice-president, marketing planning, CP Air.
He also sat on the boards of Canuck Place Children’s Hospice, Make-A-Wish Foundation of Canada and he is the founder and past Board Member of Helijet Airways.
Munro is survived by his wife Paddy, twin sons Aaron and Sean, and twin daughters Shannon and Terri.
