OTTAWA — Former CRTC commissioner and columnist Andrew Cardozo has been appointed senator today by the Governor General, one of three independents to fill vacancies in the upper house from Ontario.
A CRTC commissioner from 1997 to 2003 and an adjunct professor of journalism and communications at Carleton University, Cardozo has written columns on the CRTC, including one this summer in The Hill Times about the regulator taking on increasing important role. He wrote regularly for The Hill Times and was previously a columnist for the Toronto Star and Broadcast Dialogue, Cartt’s sister publication.
Cardozo has also been the president of the Pearson Centre for Progressive Policy since 2013.
“A think-tank leader, his public policy areas of expertise span Canadian government and politics, multiculturalism, anti-racism, diversity and equity, broadcasting and cultural policy, and skills development especially the future of work,” reads a profile of Andrew Cardozo on the Prime Minister’s website.
The Governor General also appointed Sharon Burey, a pediatrician and health advocacy leader, and Rear-Admiral Rebecca Patterson, a Canadian Armed Forces leader.
“Today, I welcome Dr. Sharon Burey, Mr. Andrew Cardozo, and Rear-Admiral Rebecca Patterson as Parliament’s newest independent senators,” Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said in a statement. “I know that their rich experiences, diverse perspectives, and passion for public service will help them be strong voices for all Ontarians. I look forward to working with them, and with all senators, as we continue to build a stronger, more prosperous, and more inclusive country that works for all Canadians.”
