After connecting 17 more underserved Saskatchewan communities to its fibre network in 2024, Saskatoon-based internet service provider FlexNetworks announced Wednesday an additional eight communities are on track for network expansion in early 2025.
The communities that will benefit from the next phase of FlexNetworks’ fibre expansion include Aspen Acres, Glacier Ridge, Green Gate Estates, Kannata Valley, Maple Grove, and rural areas of Dundurn, Floral Road and Grasswood, according to a company press release.
The communities newly connected in 2024 were Arlington Beach, Bluebird Way, Clearview Resort, Etters Beach, Green Acres, Heritage Valley, Mohr’s Beach, North Colesdale Park, Silverado Estates, Sorenson’s Beach, South Colesdale Park, Sundale Beach, Uhl’s Bay, and the resort villages of Glen Harbour, Island View, Pelican Pointe and Sunset Cove.
“At FlexNetworks, we take pride in doing telecom differently,” Gianni Creta, CEO of FlexNetworks, said in the press release. “By bringing high-speed, reliable fibre internet to these underserved communities, we’re empowering residents and businesses to thrive in today’s digital age. Symmetrical upload and download speeds set us apart, and we’re excited to help more people understand why this matters for work, play, and everything in between.”
“Our mission to connect Saskatchewan doesn’t stop here,” said Tyson Almasi, director of residential business development at FlexNetworks. “This year, we’ll continue to light up new areas, bringing the fastest, most reliable internet to even more people. Our hands-on approach to customer care and community involvement reflects our belief that every connection — both online and offline — is an opportunity to make a difference.”
FlexNetworks announced last year it was receiving $10.5 million from the federal government’s Universal Broadband Fund to connect 22 underserved communities to high-speed internet by December 2025. Fifteen of the communities included in FlexNetworks’ June 2024 announcement are listed in Wednesday’s press release.
A FlexNetworks spokesperson confirmed via email that the remainder of the communities that fell under the UBF program and weren’t completed in 2024 will be on the company’s 2025 list. FlexNetworks’ financial contribution to the projects is approximately $6.5 million.
The spokesperson said FlexNetworks offers symmetrical upload and download speeds up to 2500 Mbps to every single community in which it has built its fibre-to-the-home network.
