NIAGARA, Ont. – Southwestern Integrated Fibre Technology (SWIFT) announced last week 765 homes and businesses in the Niagara Region will have high-speed Internet access by the end of the year.
“Cogeco Connexion, in partnership with SWIFT, is constructing a 53-kilometre fibre-optic network to bring improved broadband access to the communities of Grimsby Centre, Grassie, Allen’s Corners, Kimbo, Fulton, Abingdon, Caistor Centre and Caistorville,” a SWIFT press release says.
Construction began in January and service is expected to be fully available in these communities by December.
The project is valued at $3.3 million with the governments of Canada and Ontario each committing up to $923,000 through SWIFT, according to a press release from the Ontario government.
“Together in partnership with local and regional internet service providers we are pleased at the speed in which progress is being made in Niagara to quickly deploy critical broadband infrastructure in efforts to increase access to high-speed service in many of the Region’s underserved communities,” said Barry Field, executive director of SWIFT, in the organization’s press release.
This project is the last of four SWIFT projects in the Niagara Region to begin construction. It was announced last December construction had begun on the other three projects.
