TORONTO – Film, television, digital and commercial productions poured $2.01 billion in to Toronto’s coffers last year, breaking the previous record of $1.5 billion set in 2015, the city said this week.

Foreign and domestic television series remained the dominant investment type in Toronto, contributing $908 million in 2016.  Investment in animation and visual effects jumped 179% to $403 million over 2015 totals, while investment in commercials production grew 10% to $380 million.

In addition, domestic and international screen-based productions exceeded the $1-billion mark for the sixth consecutive year, with a 33% lift over the $1.55 billion reported in 2015, and foreign major production investment in film and television increased 49% to $794 million.

Combining the $2.01 billion with figures from broadcasters and the interactive digital media cluster resulted in a total investment figure of $3.26 billion for all of Toronto's film, television and digital media production in 2016, a 16% increase from 2015.
