Fido customers getting 5G upgrade at no extra cost

Rogers announced Tuesday its Fido customers are being upgraded automatically from 4G LTE to 5G at no additional cost and with no plan change required.

Starting March 10, new customers joining Fido will now get 5G included on their plan from day one, Rogers said in a press release. Existing Fido customers with 5G-compatible devices can experience the reliability and faster speeds of 5G with the automatic upgrade, which is expected to be completed March 18.

Rogers said “virtually all” Fido customers are being upgraded to 5G, except those with Basic plans or Wireless Home Phone. Customers with devices that are not 5G-ready will continue to receive 4G and LTE coverage, Rogers added.

“5G makes it easier for both new and existing customers to browse, stream, and stay connected on a network designed to keep up with life’s pace,” Rogers’s press release said. “With speeds up to 1 Gbps, customers with eligible devices will start immediately accessing fast, reliable 5G Canada-wide, including features they enjoy today like big data buckets and worry-free roaming options.”

“We’re proud to bring fast and reliable 5G access to our Fido customers,” Anne Martin-Vachon, president of wireless at Rogers, said in a statement. “This rollout provides Canada-wide connectivity our customers can count on at no extra cost.”

Rogers’s discount flanker brand Fido “is all about keeping wireless service simple, affordable and easy to feel confident about,” Vachon said. “Expanding 5G access at no additional cost allows more customers to benefit from a fast and reliable network with no extra steps.”
