RED DEER COUNTY, Alta. – A new fibre optic cable network is being installed into the Junction 42 Partnership Rest Area, announced Red Deer County last week.
Valo Networks, which successfully bid for the contract through a request for proposal (RFP) conducted by the county earlier this year, is doing the installation, in partnership with Canadian Fiber Optics Group. The cost of the network was not disclosed. Red Deer County is the municipal region south of the city of Red Deer, which is between Calgary and Edmonton.
“Not only will the high speed internet make the Junction 42 area attractive to businesses, the service also has potential to expand beyond the immediate business park and into a broader area of the county,” said chief administrative officer Curtis Herzberg, in a release. “We realize that reliable, affordable high speed internet is a requirement for many businesses in 2019.”
According to the county Junction 42 Partnership Rest Area (situated where Highway 42 meets Highway 2) will see its first businesses open up in late 2019, including a gas station, card lock station, and several retail food outlets to service the commercial truck sector.
The first phase of the project consists of building an 11 km fiber optic backbone network from Springbrook to the new Junction 42 development. The network is to be deployed using XG-PON technologies and will be the stepping stone to providing the county with a Gigabit speed, cost-effective fiber solution. Phase 1 is expected to be completed by December 2019, according to a release from Valo and Canadian Fibre Optics.
