The federal government, through Canadian Identity and Culture, announced Thursday that it is putting $1.89 million over two years into indigenous audio and video content production and broadcasting in Saskatchewan.
Over that two-year period, four radio stations will get a bump in funding: Minahik Achimowin (CFNK Radio 89.9 FM) in Pinehouse will receive $642,757 to continue to produce news, traditional knowledge, music and talk radio content in the Michif and Michif-Cree languages; Ile a la Crosse Communication Society (CILX Michif Radio 92.5 FM) in Île-à-la-Crosse will get $428,800 to continue producing news, music, community and language education content in Michif and English; Missinipi Broadcasting Corporation in La Ronge and Prince Albert will get $618,914 to continue producing educational content, interviews, news, talk radio and music in English, Cree, Dene and Michif; and Sipisisihk Communications (CIPI Radio 96.5 FM) in Beauval will get $200,000 to broadcast news, community events, music and cultural content in Cree and Michif.
“This support, through the Northern Aboriginal Broadcasting component of the Indigenous Languages Program, will contribute to the protection and enhancement of Indigenous languages and cultures by helping fund radio and television programming suited to the needs and realities of Cree, Dene and Métis communities in northern Saskatchewan,” a press release said.
