HILTON BEACH, ON — The federal government announced Friday another investment in high-speed Internet for three more northern Ontario communities, as part of its Connect to Innovate initiative.
Following an announcement Thursday in Sioux Lookout, Ont., David Lametti, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development, was in Hilton Beach, Ont., today to announce a $2.74-million investment in new or improved high-speed Internet access for three communities and one institution in the region. Terry Sheehan, Member of Parliament for Sault Ste. Marie, joined Lametti for the event held at the Hilton Beach Community Hall.
UPDATED: The villages, according to ISED (which were not mentioned in the original press release) are Hilton Beach, Beech Beach and Sailor's Encampment, all on St Joseph's Island, near Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. Together, we believe the population of these villages is less than 200. The public institution mentioned in the press release was not named and ISED said it would be up to Bell to identify.
“I am pleased that the federal government is investing in this very important project for this area. The growth of high-speed Internet is a digital revolution that makes communication instantaneous and clear. Individuals, families, institutions, businesses, communities and governments all benefit,” MP Sheehan said in a news release announcing the government’s investment.
In addition to the $2.74 million invested by the federal government, the funding recipient, Bell Canada, is contributing $912,000, according to the news release.
Connect to Innovate is one of several Government of Canada programs to improve telecommunications services for Canadians. It is part of the federal government’s Innovation and Skills Plan, a multi-year strategy to create well-paying jobs for the middle class.
To date, the Government of Canada has invested $63.78 million to bring high-speed Internet to Ontario’s rural and remote communities under the $500-million Connect to Innovate program.
