OTTAWA – The governments of Canada and Ontario today announced they are investing over $6 million to bring high-speed Internet to 1,191 households in rural communities in the province, including Innerkip, Strathallan, Braemar, Hickson, Beachville, Brownsville, Culloden, Mount Elgin, Salford, Sweaburg, Delmer, Foldens and Ostrander.
Execulink Telecom is the service provider for these projects, which are part of the $1.2-billion partnership the federal and provincial governments announced last July. Both governments contributed an equal amount of the funding, with the federal government’s portion coming from the Universal Broadband Fund.
“We need to close the connection gap and ensure that every nook and cranny of Ontario has access to reliable high-speed Internet — whether that’s in Hickson or Beachville, or all the way in Ostrander,” said Gudie Hutchings, minister of Rural Economic Development, in a press release. “Investments like these help create jobs, improve access to health care and online learning services, and keep us connected to our loved ones.”
The federal government is aiming to connect all Canadians to high-speed Internet by 2030, while the Ontario government plans to connect everyone in the province by 2025.
