Fairchild TV’s Media Focus recognized for journalistic excellence

TORONTO – Fairchild Television, a national channel serving Canada’s Chinese population, announced yesterday its current affairs program Media Focus won an award in the television category of the 2021 Annual Canadian Ethnic Media Association Awards for Journalistic Excellence.

The award was for a Media Focus investigative report titled 3 Kinds of Trust (Under a Pandemic), produced by Steve So, which beat out more than 60 other submissions, according to a Fairchild press release. It was the program’s first submission and win at the annual awards, which is in its 43rd year.

So’s reporting looked at the research into trust during the pandemic being done by Professor Cary Wu in the sociology department at York University.

“Wu’s research focused on three types of trust: the first being the trust between people, the second being the trust between people and an organization (such as the government, medical institutes, and the media), and the third being the trust between races,” a synopsis of 3 Kinds of Trust (Under a Pandemic) in the press release reads.

Wu found the ongoing pandemic was detrimental to people of Asian descent. “Anti-Asian sentiments and racial attacks were on the rise, with the mental health of those living in those communities on a steep decline,” the synopsis says.

“A key point to this research project was attacks on people of Asian descent and the stigmatization against China. Because of the rapid and sudden spread of this virus, many Asian living in Canada and the United States were subject to racial slurs and name-calling, leaving many to live in fear that they could potentially be attacked simply because of the way they look.”
