STOCKHOLM – The new head of Swedish telecom giant Ericsson said that his company may expand in to the cable and TV business.
Speaking earlier this week at the company’s Capital Markets Day, president and CEO Hans Vestberg said that while the company continues to see long-term growth opportunities in its traditional segments, it just may be time to look beyond them.
"However, we are not satisfied with our position today and we see new markets to address”, Vestberg said in a statement. “The capabilities we have in place today enable us to address customers also beyond traditional telecom operators such as cable and TV-companies, governments, healthcare, transport and utilities. These are industries where there is a huge need for telecommunication services."
Vestberg, who took on the president and CEO position on January 1st, also predicted that mobile broadband users will increase from today’s 400 million to 3.5 billion in 2015, requiring "operators to focus on network quality and efficiency”, particularly as consumers become “increasingly advanced and demanding”.
