Effect of blogs, cellphones on news part of discussions at RTNDA Canada conference

TORONTO – Is Afghanistan Canada’s Vietnam? This is one of the panel topics on the agenda of the sold-out RTNDA Canada national conference, running June 21-23 at Vancouver’s Sutton Place Hotel.

Another session includes Canada’s top three national anchors – CTV’s Lloyd Robertson, CBC’s Peter Mansbridge and Global Television’s Kevin Newman – discussing blogs, YouTube, MySpace, cellphones and where the world is getting its news these days.

Other panel topics include The Future of News, which will include a look at RSS feeds, IPTV, HD and citizen journalism; and Owning the Podium: Fact or Fantasy, a discussion of whether Canada has what it takes to be number one at the 2010 Olympics and among the top three nations at the 2010 Paralympic Games.

602 Communications’ Graeme Newell will talk about The Next Generation of News Branding and in a separate session Integrating the Web into the Newsroom, the Poynter Institute’s Al Tompkins will discuss Ethical Landmines in the Edit Room; and NBC’s The Today Show’s Bob Dotson will present A Survival Kit for Storytellers – How to Compete with Cell Phones and Websites.

Global National’s Ian Haysom moderates a session on Diversity – What’s Wrong with this Picture? The panel speakers are Global National’s Jas Johal, the BC Paraplegic Association’s Stephanie Cadieux and Carleton University’s Dr. Karim H. Karim. Media organizations have pledged to be more diverse and inclusive, yet remain as white and mainstream as ever, reads the session blurb.

RTNDA Canada announced Monday it has inaugurated a new diversity award named after Adrienne Clarkson, called the Adrienne Clarkson Diversity Award. It will be awarded for the news story, feature or series on television or radio that best exemplifies or explores an issue of diversity.

Clarkson will personally hand out the first Adrienne Clarkson Diversity Award during the June 22 President’s Gala at the conference.
