EchoStar creates set top box for cable

ENGLEWOOD, CO – U.S. satellite services company EchoStar has entered the cable arena.

The company unveiled the EchoStar T2200S, which they describe as the world’s first SlingLoaded, tru2way based, multi-tuner, HD DVR set-top box designed specifically for the cable TV industry.

The box integrates Sling Media’s “placeshifting technology”, allowing cable TV subscribers to watch their home television, including live programming, recorded content stored on a DVR, and video-on-demand content, on almost any Internet-connected device, including a PC, Mac, mobile media player or mobile phone.

The SlingLoaded capabilities also enable remote video diagnostics which lets subscribers opt-in to receive remote troubleshooting from their cable company’s technical support group, which in turn, could help reduce call volume and truck rolls, the press release continues.

EchoStar will also provide cable companies the option to offer SlingGuide to their customers, an online search engine which provides the ability to schedule timers on-line and manage DVR programming remotely.

“EchoStar and Sling engineers have created one of the most powerful set-top box devices ever made for the cable industry, with the ability to watch content anywhere in the home or anyplace in the world,” said Mark Jackson, president of EchoStar Technologies, in the release.

The set top box will be on display this Wednesday at the Cable Show in Washington, and EchoStar said that they expect volume production by the end of this year.
