EastLink spending $19 million in Annapolis Valley

WOLFVILLE, N.S. – EastLink announced recently it is spending $19 million in brining local telephone competition to the Annapolis Valley in Nova Scotia.

Co-CEO Dan McKeen made the announcement earlier this month along with Wolfville mayor Bob Stead and mayors and town officials from Berwick, Kentville, New Minas and Windsor, McKeen said the expansion of telephone service into Valley communities will provide businesses and customers with local telephone savings.

“Wolfville and areas of New Minas will be the first to enjoy choice,” he said. Residents and businesses there can already subscribe to EastLink’s telephone service.

EastLink crews and contractors began network construction work in April, with an anticipated completion date of fall 2006. Service will be launched phase-by-phase to the remaining areas of New Minas and Kentville in early fall followed by Berwick, Kingston and Windsor. Residents choosing to switch to EastLink Telephone can enjoy free installation and are able to keep their existing phone number, jacks and directory listing.

“With the addition of EastLink telephone service, the residents, businesses and students in the towns of Wolfville, Berwick, Kentville, New Minas and Windsor will benefit from the competitive pricing in telecommunications services,” said Mayor Stead. “It’s one more reason why the Annapolis Valley is a great place to live and work.”

“We welcome today’s investment announcement and the option of choice and competition that will result for businesses throughout the Valley," added Bob Lancashire, executive director, Eastern Kings Chamber of Commerce.

“We expect telephone competition will increase the attractiveness of Annapolis Valley towns for business and help create additional employment opportunities,” said McKeen.

EastLink is the fifth largest cable company in Canada and was the first to offer customers local telephone service over a state-of-the-art digital network.
