Eastlink completes Mindemoya fibre project, continues expansion in Ontario

MINDEMOYA, ON – Eastlink said today its fibre network is now complete in Mindemoya, Ont., as the company continues to expand its fibre footprint in the province.

The project in Mindemoya, located on Manitoulin Island, was partly funded by the federal government’s Universal Broadband Fund program. Eastlink last provided an update on the project in January.

“Demand for access to high-speed internet in more rural communities has never been greater, which makes builds like these so important,” Eastlink CEO Jeff Gillham said in a press release today. “We’re proud to deliver on that in Mindemoya and soon other Ontario communities.”

Eastlink announced a year ago a total investment of $125 million — including $69 million from the Ontario government’s Accelerated High Speed Internet Program — would bring high-speed Internet to almost 10,000 homes and businesses in the communities of Greater Sudbury, Bruce, Lambton and Huron. This investment includes approximately 2,500 kms of new fibre being installed by Eastlink.

Construction is currently underway in Huron, according to Eastlink’s release today.

“We are very pleased that work on our fibre network in Huron has officially begun,” said Steve Irvine, Eastlink’s senior vice-president of engineering and CTO, in the release. “Permitting work is ongoing and prep for fibre placement is in full swing.”
