DUFFERIN COUNTY and CALEDON, ON – The governments of Canada and Ontario said Tuesday they have invested more than $3.6 million combined to help bring high-speed Internet access to 964 homes, farms and businesses in Dufferin County and the Town of Caledon, Ont.
The funding was provided through Southwestern Integrated Fibre Technology (SWIFT), which awarded the contracts for the broadband expansion projects in September 2020 – one contract to EH!Tel Networks for a project in Dufferin County and another contract to North Frontenac Telephone Corporation (NFTC) for the Caledon project.
An Ontario government press release yesterday said the two projects have now been completed.
EH!Tel Networks has finished construction of a fibre network servicing more than 58 kilometres of roadway in the Townships of Melancthon and Mulmur, bringing high-speed Internet access to 665 previously underserved homes and businesses in Redickville, Honeywood, Black Bank, Ruskview, Terra Nova, Kilgorie, Horning’s Mills, Whitfield and Springwater Lakes, according to a SWIFT press release.
EH!Tel Networks received a little under $2.4 million in government funding via SWIFT to help complete this project, according to SWIFT’s approved projects webpage.
In Caledon, NFTC has completed construction of a 29-kilometre fibre network to provide high-speed connectivity to 299 homes and businesses in the community of The Grange and areas in Caledon North between the communities of Belfountain, Inglewood and Boston Mills, as well as Tamarac Estates, according to SWIFT. NFTC received just under $1.3 million in government funding to help build this network.
“We’re pleased to work with local internet service providers EH!Tel Networks and North Frontenac Telephone Corporation (NFTC) in our efforts to expand broadband connectivity in both Dufferin County and Caledon,” Barry Field, executive director of SWIFT, said in the release. “With the completion of these two high-speed projects, the newly installed broadband networks not only bring enhanced online experiences and expand digital possibilities for residents but also serve as a catalyst for economic growth within the region.”
