Docuseries backed by Telus Fund now streaming on Vice’s Take Care hub

TORONTO — Vice Media Group announced today three docuseries financed by the Telus Fund as part of the “Take Care” initiative are now ready to stream on Vice’s online Take Care hub.

Vice and Telus first announced the docuseries were going into production earlier this summer. In keeping with the aim of the Take Care initiative, the three projects focused on the mental health and wellness of young Canadians.

“The chosen producers created insightful docuseries about finding happiness in a hobby no matter your skill level, the mental health concerns of young Asian-Canadians, and how water can be a tool for better well-being,” reads a press release.

“We entered our Take Care initiative with one mission in mind: to support the health and wellness of diverse young Canadians, and thanks to the incredible talent of the three production teams we’re thrilled to be delivering on this mission,” says Amy Davies, vice-president of insights publishing at Vice Media Group, in the release. “Each project is unique in approach and calls for open dialogue around mental health.”

The docuseries are:

Bad at This (6 episodes x 6 minutes): Directed by Jessie Posthumus and produced by Stitch Media Ontario Inc. (Evan Jones and Sonya Suraci).

“In a culture that constantly rewards perfection and productivity, Bad at This reveals whimsically poignant stories about young people who suck at their hobbies and love them anyway…These characters delve into their emotions and motivations; with an emphasis on how sucking at an activity is contributing to their overall mental health, and changing their perspective on their identity,” reads a synopsis in the press release.

Breaking Ground (4 episodes x 5 minutes): Directed by Brittany Nguyen and Nightingale, and produced by Film.ca Productions (Jeff Knoll), GMT Pictures (Mikelle Virey), Nguyen and Nightingale.

Breaking Ground follows four young Asian Canadians on their journey to positive mental health. They unpack and confront the cultural, language, and generational barriers in their lives as they forge a path for others to follow. In an era where anti-Asian discrimination is a pressing issue, Breaking Ground hopes to facilitate thoughtful conversation about the visibility of being Asian.”

Living in Flow (6 episodes x 5 minutes): Directed by Meaghan Wright and produced by Gorgeous Mistake Productions (Walter Forsyth) and Britney Canzi.

Living in Flow follows six Atlantic Canadian youth facing different mental health challenges. Each episode highlights the self-care outlets they have found through the lens of one of the most fundamental elements of sustaining life — water. They do this through learning how to ride emotional waves, drinking clean into sobriety, isolation in nature as a time for self-reflection, crying out of the pain through music, tending your soul for unlimited growth, and embracing deep cultural connections to the environment.”
