Documentary about being LGBTQ in politics premieres April 19

OTTAWA — A film documenting the challenges facing Canadian LGBTQ members in politics premieres April 19.

Coming Out in Politics, a documentary directed by filmmaker and Cartt freelance reporter Christopher Guly, will premiere on Outtv.com and Outtv’s streaming platforms in Canada (the OUTtv Prime Video Channel and the OUTtv Apple TV channel), followed by the OUTtv broadcast premiere on Thursday, April 20, 2023 at 9pm ET/PT.

“Much has changed for members of Canada’s LGBTQ community hoping to run for and hold public office since [NDP] Svend Robinson made history in 1988 when he became the first Canadian Member of Parliament to come out as gay,” according to a synopsis of the film.

The Liberal government has three out ministers in its cabinet, the most in Canadian history, the Conservatives have their first out MP, and the Green Party recently had a transgender interim leader — a first for any major political party in Canada.

“Coming Out in Politics is not as lonely a path as it was for Svend Robinson,” the synopsis continues. “But running for or holding office for out politicians still comes with its challenges” as interviewees discuss in the Claire Pictures Inc. documentary.
