DIY ads on rural TV listings channels


CALGARY – Advertisers on the TV listings channels in a number of smaller Shaw Cable communities can now make their own ads, if they like, opening up the service to all kinds of advertisers from local businesses to someone selling a used car.

Corus Custom Networks, a division of Corus Entertainment Inc. today announced the launch of its Create Your Own Ad service, enabling Canadians in Shaw Cable communities across western Canada to design their own television advertising online for the TV Listings Channel.

Corus, which is controlled by the Shaw family, owns the TV listings channels carried by Shaw Cable.

The new service marks the first time the company has offered web-based sales, and also represents the first time that the TV Listings Channel has opened its doors to individual consumers selling their stuff on television.

”The TV Listings Channel, which reaches over five million western Canadians, has always provided businesses with effective ways to advertise in their local markets,” says Tyler Alton, vice-president and general manager, Corus Custom Networks. ”With the introduction of the create your own ad website, the TV listings channel can now extend this service to individuals, offering them a convenient and affordable alternative to print-based classified ads.”

For approximately $20 to $30 per week, people can place an ad on television to sell vehicles, rent properties, promote their small business and more. Users create their own full-colour ad that is guaranteed to appear on-air a minimum of 140 times a week in exclusive rural locations. The easy-to-follow instructions guide users through the web site, from writing ad copy and uploading their images and logos to choosing their location and airtime. Once the online payment has been processed and the ad has passed an internal broadcast quality check, users should see their ad air within hours of submission.

Approximately 160,000 homes and businesses in 41 western markets (see below) will be introduced to the new service through a direct mail piece and a series of six on-air promotions on the TV Listings Channel.
