NEW YORK and BURBANK, Calif. – Disney announced today it is introducing a cheaper, ad-supported subscription option for its streaming service Disney+ in addition to its option to subscribe without ads.
The ad-supported option will be available in the U.S. later this year. Details including a launch date and pricing will be announced later, according to a press release.
A Disney+ spokesperson confirmed Canadians will be able to choose the ad-supported option in 2023 as part of a plan to expand access to it internationally.
Disney expects the ad-supported option to help it build towards its goal of achieving 230-260 million Disney+ subscribers by its fiscal year 2024. (Disney+ had 129.8 million subscribers as of Jan. 1, 2022, according to Disney’s report for Q1 2022.)
“Expanding access to Disney+ to a broader audience at a lower price point is a win for everyone – consumers, advertisers, and our storytellers,” said Kareem Daniel, chairman, Disney Media and Entertainment Distribution, in a press release.
“More consumers will be able to access our amazing content. Advertisers will be able to reach a wider audience, and our storytellers will be able to share their incredible work with more fans and families.”
