Discovery hires former CanWest producer as new in-house EP


TORONTO – Anne-Marie Varner has been hired as executive producer in-house programming at Discovery Channel.

Varner assumes the role on Monday, September 19, 2005 said Paul Lewis, president and general manager.

Varner will oversee all in-house productions, including Daily Planet, Discovery Channel’s flagship daily science magazine that explores the latest science behind the headlines and the unusual and accessible science of everyday life. Varner will also be responsible for managing a growing roster of specials and the re-versioning of productions for international broadcasters through Discovery Channel Canada’s in-house production company, Exploration Production Inc.

Varner comes to Discovery Channel with extensive entrepreneurial experience developing and producing innovative television programming. Most recently, Varner was head of original production for CanWest Media Works Inc. and was involved in the development and programming of Global’s eight specialty services. Prior to that role, Varner was owner and president of Spin Films Ltd. and held the post of CEO of the Nova Scotia Film Development Corporation.
