Discovery+ coming to Canada

DISCOVERY CEO DAVID ZASLAV announced yesterday Discovery+ will be coming to Canada in the second half of the year.

During a conference call on the company’s second quarter earnings, he stated “we plan to launch in a number of key markets and territories during the second half of this year, including Brazil, Canada, and the Philippines.”

Discovery+ currently has over 18 million customers across the United States and some European countries, according to Zaslav.

It is unclear at this point what the implications of the launch will be for Canadian companies like Bell and Corus that licence content rights from Discovery and have brands that Discovery has minority ownership in, including Bell’s Discovery Channel and Corus’s HGTV Canada and Food Network Canada. It is also unclear how exactly this will affect online streaming services Crave and StackTV, which are owned by Bell and Corus respectively.

Bell and Discovery declined to comment on this story and Corus did not respond to a request for comment by deadline.
