Discovery Channel sprouts new eco-site

TORONTO – It’s fitting that DiscoveryChannel.ca chose Earth Day to launch ExpeditionGreen.ca, its new environmental adventure site. Discovery Channel Canada calls ExpeditionGreen.ca the brand’s “new online destination for adventure-based eco-content.”

“We’ve designed ExpeditionGreen.ca to reveal the high adventures to be had in the worlds of science and ecology,” said Jon De la Mothe, executive producer for Discovery Channel Interactive, in a press release. “We know that visitors to our web site expect content that’s fun and relevant, and presented in a way that’s entertaining and not preachy.”

According to the news release, ExpeditionGreen.ca already has as many as 20,000 visitors a day. Some of the content featured currently on the site includes: Web-exclusive video of a city-wide garbage vacuum being used in Sweden; full-segment and full-episode video from Discovery Channel’s latest green shows; and a video game engine used to build a first-person-perspective look at climate change, from the time of Canada’s First Nations to the present.

ExpeditionGreen.ca visitors can also check out editors’ picks for the Top 10 mountains and the lowest-impact eco-tours around the globe. In May, ExpeditionGreen.ca will be going on the road, taking a look at climate change firsthand in the Canadian Arctic.

ExpeditionGreen.ca is sponsored by BC Hydro and the site will feature the BC Hydro Team Power Smart campaign from May 20 to August 31. In addition, ExpeditionGreen.ca will be sharing content and links with TreeHugger.com, which will make available to site visitors more than 40 “How to Go Green” guides with titles such as “How to Green Your Summer”, “How to Green Your Pet”, “How to Green Your Wedding” and “How to Green Your Funeral”.
