Disasters doing well for Bell


NEW ORLEANS – Bell Media said today Smithsonian Channel has picked up season three of its docuseries Disasters At Sea for the U.S. market.

With seasons one and two having already debuted to audience success in the U.S. and sold to more than 100 markets worldwide, including Eastern and Western Europe, as well as Australia, the docuseries is now in post-production for a third season for Canada’s Discovery Channel.

The announcement was made today from Realscreen by Tony Leadman, head of Bell Media worldwide program distribution.

Each episode of Disasters At Sea tells a true story of a maritime disaster, combining re-enactments with expert analysis from marine investigators.

The show joins Discovery Channel Canada’s “Mighty” franchise as the latest Bell factual series to enjoy success beyond Canada. Mighty Ships, Mighty Cruise Ships, Mighty Planes, and Mighty Trains, together represent more than 130, hour-long episodes. These series’ are produced by Bell Media Studio’s exploration production division.

The success of these franchises “are examples of Bell Media Studio’s growing appetite to develop and greenlight hit original programming for Bell Media channels in Canada, and to fuel distribution to audiences around the world,” said Mike Cosentino, president, content and programming, in a press release.
