OTTAWA – A new group called the Digital Television Technology Group (DTV-TG) has been formed to collaborate on technical and operational issues surrounding the roll-out of digital television in Canada.
Its formation follows the dismantling of Canadian Digital Television Inc. (CDTV), headed by Michael McEwen, in August 2006.
The inaugural meeting of the new group was held just three months later. Paul Hearty, of Ryerson, and Michele Beck, of Telesat, were appointed as co-chairs of the new group at the November 2006 meeting.
The new group is carrying out collaborative investigative projects and research to provide decision makers in industry and government with the technical information they need to plan for, and advance, the roll-out in Canada of all forms of digital television from HDTV through standard definition TV to lower resolution TV services delivered over various media, including traditional broadcasting, IP, and mobile applications.
DTV-TG is examining voluntary standards, analyses of new developments, reports of research, tests and demonstrations, and reports on planning, execution, timelines/schedules, and guidelines/best practices for DTV.
The group meets a minimum of three times a year. The next meeting takes place on October 4 in Mississauga at the Tandberg/Ericsson Offices.
Membership is free and is open to all interested parties, including representatives of Canadian broadcasters, distribution undertakings (‘wire-line’, wireless, and satellite), equipment manufacturers, consumer electronics companies, research facilities, government departments and agencies, colleges, universities and retailers.
