Details announced for high-speed Internet projects receiving federal, Ontario government funds


OTTAWA – The Government of Canada today highlighted over $435.5 million in funding to bring high-speed Internet service to thousands of homes in Ontario.

Seven separate announcements were made today, which provided details for multiple projects that will benefit from the $1.2-billion partnership between the federal and Ontario governments announced last July. The partnership between the two levels of government is to bring high-speed Internet access to over 280,000 households across the province.

The first announcement from today included over $96 million to connect 22,546 Ontario households. The details are as follows:

  • Digital Infrastructure Group Inc. is receiving $45 million to improve access for 13,448 households in 39 communities.
  • Cogeco Connexion Inc. is to receive a total of $6.3 million for two projects to improve access for 1,141 households in six communities.
  • Bell Canada will receive a total of $45.5 million for two projects to improve access for 7,957 households in 30 communities.

The second announcement includes over $32 million in funding to connect 4,485 Ontario households. Bell Canada alone will receive the total amount to improve access for the households announced, which are in 21 communities. For more, please click here.

The third announcement includes nearly $15.5 million in funding to connect 3,659 Ontario households. Bell Canada is also the sole service provider included in this announcement. The company will complete two projects benefitting households in 16 communities. For more, please click here.

The fourth announcement includes over $15 million in funding to connect 1,948 Ontario households. The details are as follows:

  • Mornington Communications Co-operative Limited is to receive $11.7 million to improve access for 1,390 households in 14 communities.
  • Quadro Communications Co-Operative Inc. will receive a total of $3.8 million for three projects to improve access for 558 households in 10 communities.

The fifth announcement includes over $51 million to connect 4,086 Ontario households. The details are as follows:

  • Bell Canada will receive $49.5 million to improve access for 3,852 households in 36 communities.
  • $2.3 million will be provided to improve access to 234 households in two communities, with further details about the project to be provided at a later date.

The sixth announcement includes over $63 million to connect 13,748 Ontario households. The details are as follows:

  • Huron Telecommunications Co-operative Limited is to receive a total of $4.5 million for five projects, serving 897 households in 11 communities.
  • Tuckersmith Communications Co-operative Ltd. is receiving $10.6 million to improve access for 1,191 households in 11 communities.
  • Cogeco Connexion Inc. is to receive $17.7 million for three projects to improve access 3,341 households in 13 communities.
  • Vianet Inc. is to receive $352,850 to improve access for 117 households in one community.
  • Bell Canada is to receive $30.4 million to improve access to 8,202 households in 28 communities.

The seventh and final announcement for the day includes over $163 million to connect 7,772 Ontario households. The details are as follows:

  • Keewaytinook Okimakanak will receive a total of $59.4 million for two projects to improve access for 3,242 households in 23 communities.
  • Matawa First Nations Management will receive $62.7 million to improve access for 689 households in five communities.
  • $41.1 million will be provided for four more projects to improve access for a total of 3,841 households in 11 communities. Further details are to be provided at a later date.

Additionally, yesterday the federal government announced details for projects using $16 million in funding from the same $1.2-billion partnership with the Ontario government. Of the funding, Execulink Telecom Inc. will receive $3.6 million to improve access for 656 households in eight communities. The remaining $12.4 million will be provided to improve access to around 2,674 households in Six Nations of the Grand River – further details will be provided at a later date.
