TORONTO – Dell Canada has partnered with mobile app developer Fongo on a new calling app designed to help Canadians cut costs on their mobile phone bills.
Dell Voice uses VoIP technology to receive and place calls with a users’ existing data connection (3G, 4G or WiFi) on a network owned by Canadian CLEC Fibernetics. The app includes free local and long-distance calls to many, but not all, areas of Canada; free unlimited incoming calls; plus free voicemail, caller ID, and call waiting. Users may also choose a local Canadian phone number for their Dell Voice line.
Dell Voice can be downloaded for free from the Apple App Store and the Android Market. It is expected to be available for BlackBerry starting next month.
“Dell and Fongo want to tilt the competitive playing field by offering smart phone users everything we believe they need in a mobile phone service – for free,” said Fongo co-founder and chief marketing officer John Stix, in the announcement. “Dell Voice aims to help Canadians reduce the cost or even eliminate the need for a voice plan. I believe Dell Voice is a game changer that has the potential to transform the telecommunications industry, while helping to put money back into the pockets of Canadian consumers and business owners.”
