Dejero live streams Spanish sportsman’s mountain climb for charity

WATERLOO, Ont. — Canadian video and data transport specialist Dejero announced today its equipment was used recently to live stream Spanish sports figure Miguel Ángel Roldán’s ascent to Spain’s most notorious summit, the Naranjo de Bulnes.

Using a Dejero EnGo mobile transmitter and Dejero Cloud Server, local production company JTM Broadcast (above) produced and delivered live coverage of Roldán’s climb across multiple Internet and social media platforms.

Roldán (right) scaled the mountain’s famous 500-metre-high vertical west face wall, to raise awareness of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease), an affliction he was diagnosed with three years ago.

Despite the harsh, remote environment of the Cantabrian mountains and challenging cellular network conditions, the Dejero EnGo transmitter positioned at the base camp provided robust, uninterrupted Internet connectivity for the live event, which was captured using multiple cameras, says a Dejero press release.

The video and audio feeds from three cameras following Roldán’s ascent, as well as from one fixed camera and a drone, were fed via a wireless link into a production mixer, and then the combined content was sent via another wireless connection to the EnGo transmitter that connected with the outside world over cellular connectivity, explains the release.

“From there, the Dejero Cloud Server, which allows the complex task of publishing live video streams in multiple formats to web and mobile devices, delivered the content via RTMP (real-time messaging protocol) to the NIREStream distribution platform, making the footage available to broadcasters and to platforms such as Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, as well as to a large screen located in Roldán’s hometown,” reads the release.

“The most important feature of the Dejero equipment for me is its reliability,” said Javier Trifol, RF engineer at JTM Broadcast, in the release.

“It has supported our productions perfectly since we purchased it last year, especially in locations with very little connectivity. This ascent was the most technically complex challenge I have faced, and also the most rewarding job of my life. I did not take any backup equipment, which illustrates my confidence in Dejero.”
