GATINEAU – The CRTC is asking for feedback from Canadians as it launches a review of its Wireless Code of Conduct.
The Wireless Code, which came into effect December 2, 2013, was designed to make it easier for consumers and small businesses to understand their contracts for cellphones and other mobile devices, plus outline their basic rights. The Commission said then that it would review the Code’s effectiveness within three years of its implementation.
The CRTC on Thursday issued a call for comments on the effectiveness of the Code and how the Code should be updated to reflect the evolution of the wireless market since the Code’s implementation. It will accept input until September 26, 2016 via an online form, in writing to the Secretary General, CRTC, Ottawa, Ontario K1A ON2; or through faxes sent to (819) 994-0218.
“The review is an opportunity for Canadians to engage with the Commission on how the Wireless Code is responding to their needs, whether it continues to be effective as the wireless market evolves, and how to resolve any issues that have arisen since the Code’s implementation”, reads the notice of consultation.
Canadians may also share their opinions and engage in discussion on the Wireless Code through an online discussion forum between September 13 – 26, and the Commission will stage a public hearing in Gatineau starting February 6, 2017.
“The Wireless Code has helped Canadians better understand their wireless services and make informed choices”, said CRTC chairman Jean-Pierre Blais, in a statement. “While we have been tracking its effectiveness, we want to hear directly from Canadians about their experiences with their service providers and the Code. This will help ensure that it continues to empower Canadians in an ever-changing wireless marketplace.”
The Wireless Code applies to all wireless service providers and is administered by the Commissioner for Complaints for Telecommunications Services (CCTS).
