In a letter Wednesday, the CRTC acknowledged the measures Meta has taken to ensure its Facebook and Instagram platforms comply with the Online News Act, while also saying the commission will continue to monitor the situation.
In October 2024, the CRTC began investigating whether Facebook was continuing to allow Canadian news to be available on its platform in violation of the Act.
In a series of responses, Meta told the CRTC it had taken steps to ensure its platforms are not operating as digital news intermediaries within the scope of the Online News Act. Meta’s most recent, publicly available response seems to be from Jan. 17, 2025, in which it reiterated it had taken measures to end news availability on its platforms in Canada.
In a Dec. 3 letter addressed to Meta’s counsel, the CRTC said: “We are writing to advise that Commission staff have reviewed all the information submitted by Meta, while actively monitoring the situation. Commission staff has noted the steps that Meta has taken to implement and enforce its policies regarding news content. We will continue to monitor the situation and will follow up as needed.”
