CRTC consults on new area code for Alberta

The CRTC last week announced the establishment of a CRTC Interconnection Steering Committee (CISC) ad hoc relief planning committee (RPC) to examine options and make recommendations for providing numbering relief to the area codes 368, 403, 587, 780 and 825 in Alberta.

The Canadian Numbering Administrator (CNA) has advised the CRTC that the existing area codes in Alberta are projected to exhaust by February 2029.

The 403 area code covers southern Alberta including Calgary, while the 780 area code covers the northern part of the province including Edmonton.

Area codes 368, 587 and 825 are overlay area codes that cover the entire province of Alberta. The 587 area code was introduced in September 2008, while 825 was introduced in April 2016, and 368 went into service in April 2022.

In November 2022, area code 568 was set aside as a future relief area code for Alberta.

The CISC ad hoc RPC is a consultative body that conducts area code relief planning in a public manner. Telecommunications service providers and members of the public are invited to participate in the RPC’s activities. The CNA is to announce the location and time of the RPC’s meetings and is to make all related documentation available on its website.
