CRTC approves extension of Northwestel data relief until end of May

GATINEAU and WHITEHORSE — The CRTC announced April 24 it is approving on an interim basis Northwestel’s request to extend its temporary relief on residential Internet usage during the Covid-19 crisis until May 31, 2020.

Northwestel had previously received permission from the CRTC to waive overage charges for customers exceeding their Internet usage caps during the months of March and April in its terrestrially served communities (which are most communities in Yukon, NWT, northern Alberta and northern B.C., says the company).

In its new decision released late Friday, the CRTC said Northwestel’s Covid-19 relief offer could be extended until the end of May. All Northwestel’s terrestrial Internet packages and rates are regulated, and the proposed changes could only take effect with CRTC approval.

As part of its short-term Covid-19 relief, Northwestel is waiving all terrestrial residential Internet data usage charges for all of its residential cable and fibre-to-the-premises Internet packages, and providing an additional 100 GB of data usage on top of the existing Internet monthly data usage allowance for all of its residential DSL Internet packages. This promotion now expires on May 31, 2020.
