Crime Beat wins Murrow Award for best international podcast

TORONTO — True-crime podcast Crime Beat from Corus Entertainment’s podcast network Curiouscast has won the 2020 Radio Television Digital News Association (RTDNA) Regional Edward R. Murrow Award for Best International Podcast, it was announced Tuesday.

Hosted by award-winning Global News crime reporter Nancy Hixt (pictured), Crime Beat was the only podcast outside the U.S. to be honoured by the RTDNA’s Murrow Awards, which recognize outstanding achievements in broadcast and digital journalism. Crime Beat was honoured for its two-part Kelly Cook: The Back-up Babysitter podcast which tells the true-crime story of a young girl abducted in Standard, Alberta in 1981.

Crime Beat is the first Canadian podcast adapted for national television, with the TV show of the same name debuting in March. The podcast was named “Most Popular New Show” in Apple Podcasts Canada’s “Best of 2019” list and has been downloaded nearly 5 million times since its launch in 2019, says the news release. Crime Beat delves into some of Canada’s most high-profile cases, sharing the story and details not heard on the news with listeners.
