OTTAWA – Thirty-four campus and community radio stations will receive over $1.4 million from the latest round of funding of the Community Radio Fund of Canada’s (CRFC) Radiometres program.

The CRFC said that the funded projects will enhance local programming, attract and train volunteers, and increase community participation.  Several of the projects revolve around local news, various partnerships between stations, schools and local organizations, the creation of a LGBTQ program, an audio art project, and an initiative focused on reconciliation  A list of the 34 recipients is available here.

CRFC president Roger Ouellette said that the record number of applications received this round is "proof that stations need, more than ever, an increased financial support from us in order to fully fulfill their mandate within their respective communities."

“In a rapidly changing media environment, there are many challenges for traditional media, but community radio has an advantage: it is a local media, made by and for the community it serves, whether it's in Whitehorse, Toronto or Shediac", added Ouellette, in the news release.

First launched in July 2012, the Radiometres program has awarded more than $10.5 million for the the implementation of 322 initiatives.  Canada's private broadcasters have provided financial support to 123 stations through Radiometres, representing close to 70% of the Canadian campus and community radio sector.

The funding for Radiometres is provided by Canada’s private radio broadcasters through a portion of their Canadian Content Development (CCD) contributions, a funding mechanism established by the CRTC.
