OTTAWA – Fifty-five campus and community radio stations will receive $996,371 to implement projects to improve local programming thanks to the second round of funding of the Community Radio Fund of Canada’s Radiometres program.
The goal of Radiometres is to increase the development, volunteer participation, and sustainability of campus and community radio stations.
And there are as many ways to meet these outcomes as there are stations. For example, this year the CRFC will fund such initiatives as an educational program on Aboriginal languages, capsules on families that have shaped Acadian history, a new program for seniors, and training on remote broadcasting.
The association received applications from stations across 12 provinces and territories, including one from Whistle Community Radio in Stouffville, Ont.
"We applied for – and have been granted – $20,000 to hire a professional host/producer for our proposed show Stouffville Morning,” says Whistle Community Radio chair Halvor Moorshead. “The Radiometres program is an excellent way to help community and campus stations produce imaginative and high quality radio shows that are not possible without some external funding.”
The CRFC acknowledges the work of the selection committee members: Caroline Côté, senior policy analyst, Canadian Heritage; Normand Landry, professor, TELUQ – Télé-université du Québec; and Lise Millette, editor of Magazine Trente and radio-web-newspaper journalist for The Canadian Press.
Most of the funding for Radiometres is provided by Canada’s private radio broadcasters through a portion of their Canadian Content Development (CCD) contributions, a funding mechanism established by the CRTC. However, the CRFC has also received contributions from SiriusXM Canada, the country’s satellite radio distributor. Over the last three years, Sirius has given a total of $600,000 to support this sector.
Since November 2012, 111 projects have received a total of $1.98 million under the Radiometres program. The CRFC has awarded $2.73 million to the campus and community radio sector in Canada since 2007. Ninety-five stations have received funding for 212 initiatives. With 170 stations in the sector, more than half of the stations have received funding from the CRFC.
