Crave to air documentary on Black comedians in Quebec

MONTRÉAL — As part of Black History Month, Bell Media’s Crave will air the documentary Une fois c’t’un noir (It Was Once a Black), a retrospective look at the humour of Black comedians in Quebec from the end of the 1970s until now, on Friday, Feb. 4.

Directed by Frédéric Pierre, this 60-minute documentary features Normand Brathwaite, Boucar Diouf, Garihanna Jean-Louis, Anthony Kavanagh, Eddy King, Michel Mpambara and Erich Preach.

These “outstanding personalities with varied and fascinating backgrounds” all return “with honesty, sometimes with seriousness, sometimes with humour, on their careers, on the prejudices they faced when becoming public figures and on significant moments taken from the archives,” reads an English translation of Bell Media’s French press release.

“With Une fois c’t’un noir, we wanted to draw a timeline to see the colossal contribution of Black comedians to the explosion of the comedy industry in Quebec in recent decades,” said Pierre, in the English translation.

“The humour of Black people here is unifying, relevant and hard-hitting, and this documentary is a kind of tribute to this humour that continues to make Quebecers laugh,” Pierre said.

“The importance of diversity at Bell Media is not just a word, it is reflected in our various productions such as Une fois c’t’un noir,” said Mélanie Bhérer, executive director of variety, lifestyle and documentary at Bell Media.

“In this documentary, Frédéric Pierre was able to highlight how Black comedians have used humour to advance society, tell their story and deconstruct prejudices.”

Une fois c’t’un noir is produced by Urbania in collaboration with Bell Media.

As well as streaming on Crave starting Feb. 4, the documentary will also be broadcast on Sunday, Feb. 20 at 9 p.m. ET on Bell Media’s Noovo and Canal D.
