Crave original ‘Yaga’ picked up by U.S. streamer AMC+

Bell Media’s Crave announced last week its original half-hour drama series Yaga, produced by Blink49 Studios and Front Street Pictures, has been acquired by AMC Global Media for the U.S. market where it will debut later this year exclusively on AMC+.

The deal was secured by Bell Media’s global distributor Sphere Abacus and follows the recent announcement that the series was picked up by Sky for the United Kingdom and Ireland. Additional territories will be announced soon, Bell Media said in a press release. A premiere date for Canada has not yet been announced.

Based on a play by Canadian playwright Kat Sandler, who also serves as writer and showrunner, Yaga reimagines the Slavic myth of Baba Yaga as a contemporary mystery thriller set in a small coastal town.

Co-directed by David Frazee and Rachel Talalay, the series stars Carrie-Anne Moss (The Matrix), Noah Reid (Schitt’s Creek), Clark Backo (Letterkenny) and Hudson Williams (Heated Rivalry). Additional cast members revealed last week by Deadline include Sheila McCarthy, Megan Follows, Ezra Franky, Patrick Gilmore, Katharine Isabelle, Hiro Kanagawa, Emilija Baranac, Georgia Acken, Anisa Harris and Sam Krochmal.

“The ongoing international momentum for Yaga, and its successful expansion into new global markets, is a testament to the show’s compelling narrative, creative team, and powerful performances,” said Justin Stockman, vice president of global content at Bell Media, in a statement. “We’re excited that U.S. audiences will soon be captivated by this contemporary retelling of a classic mythical story.”

Distributed internationally by Sphere Abacus, Yaga is available for international broadcasters as either eight half-hour episodes or four one-hour episodes.
