Bell Media’s Crave announced Tuesday it is bringing Project Runway Canada back to Canadian audiences, with a 10-episode order for the Canadian adaptation of the fashion competition series.
Using the Project Runway format licensed from Fremantle, Crave’s iteration of Project Runway Canada will be the third time the series has aired in Canada. The first season aired in 2007 on Slice (owned by Alliance Atlantis at the time) and the second season ran in 2009 on Global TV (owned then by Canwest).
Crave’s version of the series is being produced in collaboration with Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU)’s fashion school, and production is set to begin at TMU this summer.
Bell Media said casting is now open and the series is slated to debut on Crave later this year.
Canadian supermodel Coco Rocha has been tapped to host and judge participating designers’ fashion creations, alongside Canadian fashion industry icon Jeanne Beker, who has been confirmed as a judge. Additional cast will be announced soon, Crave said.
“Canada’s fashion culture and industry deserves to be celebrated, and this is the perfect moment to spotlight homegrown designers,” said Carlyn Klebuc, general manager of original programming at Bell Media, in a press release. “Project Runway is already an iconic franchise, and we can’t wait to give it a distinctly Canadian twist.”
“We are delighted to be working with our partners at Bell Media to launch Project Runway Canada,” said Michela Di Mondo, executive vice president of international distribution at Fremantle Canada. “Project Runway has had a profound effect on the fashion industry and is known globally for launching careers. We can’t wait to see Project Runway Canada open doors for some of the country’s most inspiring fashion designers in this international renowned fashion series.”
