Covid hits network experience metrics in Opensignal’s latest mobile rankings

LONDON, U.K. — Winning four out of seven awards for mobile network experience, Telus has been picked as the top wireless operator in Canada by mobile analytics company Opensignal in its latest report, released this morning.

Opensignal’s bi-annual Canada Mobile Network Experience Report awarded Telus top honours in the categories of video experience, voice app experience, download speed and upload speed. Telus scored a draw with Bell for 4G coverage experience, while Rogers was chosen as the top provider in the category of 4G availability.

In the final category — games experience, which is a new category this time — Telus and Rogers shared the award. All three national operators received a “fair” rating for games experience: on a 100-point scale, Telus scored 70.9, Rogers scored 69.9 and Bell scored 68.5.

In its report, Opensignal noted the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic and stay-at-home orders resulted in some declines in network operators’ performance in the areas of video, voice app and upload speed.

“Overall, the Canadian experience has been resilient compared with many countries. But there have been changes in mobile data consumption both in the volume of data and the locations where users are consuming mobile data. In some areas this has increased load on mobile networks. Covid-19 was one of the reasons behind declines that we saw in Video Experience rankings, Voice App Experience rankings and Upload Speed Experience scores as well,” reads Opensignal’s report.

The data for its latest mobile network experience report was collected over a 90-day period from April 1 to June 29, 2020. The total number of measurements taken were 1,131,076,889, collected from 177,536 devices. Along with its national analysis, Opensignal also examined the network operators’ scores in 11 of Canada’s largest cities, including Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Winnipeg, Toronto, Hamilton, London, Kitchener, Ottawa, Montreal and Quebec City.

In addition, in July, Opensignal released a report looking at how mobile experience varies across most of Canada’s provinces, including British Columbia, Alberta, Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec and the Atlantic provinces. For this report, Opensignal compared users’ mobile experience on Canada’s three national carriers with that experienced on regional players’ networks, such as Freedom Mobile and Quebec’s Videotron.
